How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer for Your Wedding Day

What Matters Most When Choosing Your Photographer
Wedding days are grand, beautiful, and deeply personal. It's only natural for you to want the best photographs taken during your special day. But when it's time to choose who will capture it all, the decision can feel overwhelming.
Where do you even begin? You can scroll through hundreds of Instagram feeds, portfolios, reels, and more goldmines of photographs. But when you stop and ask yourself, "How do I choose the right wedding photographer?" the answer goes beyond technical skill. It's about finding someone who notices the small moments without being asked, someone you feel comfortable enough to be yourself around, someone you trust with the most intimate parts of your day. Those are the photos that stay with you years later.
Here's what to look for in a wedding photographer if you want more than just pretty pictures.
How to Know When a Photographer Truly Fits Your Vision
If you're like most brides, you've probably been saving inspiration photos and building Pinterest boards to figure out how you want your wedding images to feel. It's how you narrow down things like your color palette, style, and overall mood. One of the first signs a photographer aligns with your vision is when their work naturally reflects the look and feeling you've been drawn to. But as I said, it's not all about pretty pictures. When you share your vision with your photographer, do they make you feel heard, understood, and comfortable?
During consultations, most couples can sense right away. That moment of relief, when someone immediately "gets it," is a strong sign you've found the right fit. A small tip is to describe what you're envisioning and pay attention to how the photographer reflects it to you. How would they go about it? That mutual understanding is everything, especially if you're searching for a wedding photographer who can reflect exactly what you had in mind. You can then think of what photography style will bring that vision to life.
Understanding Photography Styles and Finding the Best One for You
I've photographed plenty of weddings in Oklahoma, and one thing I've learned is this: couples rarely fit into just one photography "box." If you're having trouble differentiating each style and choosing one for your wedding, here's a bit of a guide for you:
Documentary wedding photography - Envision this: your photos look unposed and unscripted. If you want a more authentic approach, this style is what you need. Think, re-living moments you didn't know were captured, like a quiet tear during vows, your friends losing their minds on the dance floor, or your dad squeezing your hand before you walk out. If you want your photos to feel honest and full of real emotion, documentary is your lane.
Editorial wedding photography - Imagine your photographs in a Vogue magazine. Your photos will have a sense of style and sophistication. Compared to the first, this has a bolder and polished look, often with posed photos. If you love fashion, glamour, or a more curated look, this style will probably speak to you.
Film wedding photography - Nostalgic photos that feature rich, cinematic tones, and of course, the classic grainy texture that screams emotional and dreamy. For this style, we're stepping away from the digital lens and capturing photos on analog cameras, so the photos have that natural texture you can't fake with a filter. If you love images that feel romantic, old-school, and a little bit like a memory already, film might be exactly what you're looking for.
Light and airy photography - If you're a fan of pictures with soft, natural light and an ethereal feel, this one's for you. Bonus: If you have an outdoor or spring wedding, this style makes your photos glow with even more warmth and brightness. If you want your photos to feel fresh, romantic, and effortless, you'll probably lean this way.
Moody/dark wedding photography - Now, this is the opposite of light and airy. We're talking deep shadows and high contrast. Intense images that are filled with emotion and have an atmospheric look. Couples who love darker palettes, candlelit receptions, black gowns, or a more cinematic vibe often fall in love with this style.
And here's the best part: you don't have to pick just one. I've captured weddings with different styles added to the mix. There is no wrong answer for this one. Once you figure out what you want, choosing a photographer becomes easier.
The Balance Between Artistry and Storytelling
Your day is beautiful on its own, but how will your photographer translate this beauty into photos that feel like you? This is where artistry and storytelling come together.
This balance is different for every couple. Some want a bold, editorial wedding photography feel, while others prefer soft, quiet documentary wedding photography, something a bit more natural-looking. The important part is that your photographer understands which style reflects you and can blend both when the moment calls for it.
Here's a small tip: ask the photographer to walk you through a full gallery from one wedding. You'll be able to see how they handle both posed portraits and candid photographs, and whether their storytelling feels like a match for your style or if it feels a bit too candid.
Finding a Photographer Who Reflects Your Style and Energy
When we talk about style, we're thinking, what photos feel like you? Do you love warm, golden tones that feel nostalgic? Are you more of a true-to-life color person who wants everything to look exactly as it did in the moment? Maybe you're pulled toward moodier edits with deeper contrast, or you lean toward a soft, light-and-airy finish. If their galleries consistently match the atmosphere and tone you're imagining, that's a strong sign they can reflect your style.
Besides that, energy and connection are so important. Are you and your partner playful, calm, bold, or romantic? Do you need someone to be a wallflower and blend in on your wedding day, or do you want someone to direct you and your party around to get the pictures right? Many of my clients love it when I become their personal hype-woman. Need posing help? I'm on it. Want someone who can break the tension or give you silly little cues to help you relax? That's part of what I love doing. The right photographer will match both your visual style and the energy you want around you.
What Sets a Great Wedding Photographer Apart
The JayBird Photography Experience That Shows in Every Lighting and Location
No matter where your wedding venue is and the time of the day, a great photographer will be able to roll with anything. Yes, the venue is set, the shot list is ready, and weddings are meticulously planned, but external factors are always going to be thrown at us. The light changes. The timeline falls behind. The ceremony spot gets moved last minute. Your photographer should be calm and skilled enough to handle all of it without letting you feel the stress.
If you're dreaming of golden hour portraits (honestly, who isn't?), we'll build that into the timeline so we don't miss it. If your photos are after the sun sets, we can use studio lights to make up for the lack of natural light.
Prior to each wedding day, I make sure to scout the location and already plan ahead where we'll take your photos, so on the day itself, we don't scramble. A helpful way to check this is to ask for full wedding galleries shot in different lighting and venues. If their work stays consistent throughout, that's a strong green flag.
Traveling Seamlessly Between Oklahoma and Destination Weddings
Some couples want to find a local photographer close to them. Others are planning a wedding somewhere that feels like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Some photographers like to keep it close to home, but others like me are willing and happy to travel wherever your heart takes you.
When I travel, I handle the logistics with you ahead of time so nothing feels confusing or last-minute. We go over timelines, venue details, travel plans, and any location quirks early. Of course, this comes with additional cost to be discussed with your photographer, but this should be a simple and upfront conversation with the right photographer.
A Consistent JayBird Photography Style and Wedding Experience You Can Trust
I shoot with a mix of styles depending on what the moment needs and what you want. But through all of it, one thing stays the same: emotional storytelling that still looks beautiful on your wall years from now.
I'll walk through your timeline with you ahead of time, help you plan, and guide you on the wedding day so you never feel awkward or unsure. And if you're the kind of couple who needs a little fun, a little calm, or someone who can keep things moving, I'm the girl to call. I love working closely with my clients. I'm not the photographer who disappears into a corner. I'm the one making sure you feel good while we're creating images that feel like you.

Wedding Photography Pricing and What's Included
What Quality Wedding Photography Really Includes
Depending on the budget you set aside for your wedding vendors, ensure that the price you're paying matches what you're getting. As I've mentioned multiple times, beyond taking pretty pictures, it includes the planning that happens before your wedding day, the way your photographer supports you during it, and the care they put into preserving your memories after.
How to Choose the Best Option for Your Budget
It's normal to have a wish list and a budget that might not perfectly align at first. That's why my tip is to balance your wants and costs. What matters most to you?
A few helpful ways to decide:
- Start with your non-negotiables. Do you want full-day coverage? A second shooter? Engagement photos that come with the package? A physical album? Figure out what you'd regret not having later.
- Think about the parts of the day that matter most. If you care deeply about getting-ready moments down until your exit, make sure your coverage fits that.
- Ask what's flexible. Sometimes adjusting hours, add-ons, or paying in phases makes the right package doable. Always inquire with your photographer, so you know what to expect and what they can expect from you.
Why Choose JayBird Photography for your Wedding
My wedding packages start at $3,800, and if that fits what you're budgeting for photography, I'd genuinely love to be part of your day.
What that usually includes (depending on the package):
- Up to 12 hours of coverage
- Travel to your venue (Oklahoma or destination)
- Edited, story-driven galleries
- Print credit + custom print shop access
- Snail mail
- Faceless custom illustrations and more keepsakes
Beyond the list, it's the experience you'll have with me that makes the difference. The real proof isn't only in my portfolio but in the words of the couples I've worked with. Their stories and testimonials are the reason so many trust me with something this meaningful.
I have loved and known photography for a long time. I studied Photographic Arts in college, with a minor in Journalism, so storytelling has always been at the heart of how I shoot.

Here's how it will go: First, you'll send an inquiry so I can hear about your day, your vibe, and what you're dreaming up. Then we'll lock in your date, go through a quick questionnaire, and start shaping a photo plan that fits you.
Second, once you've signed the contract and paid your retainer, we'll talk through your visions. We can even collaborate on a Pinterest board! I'll guide you through everything you're unsure about, be it the location, outfits, timing, and poses. I'll also send you little prep guides before the session with easy day-of tips.
On the wedding day, I show up early, ready, and calm. I'll guide you when you need direction, hype you up when you feel nervous, and step back when the real moments are unfolding. You won't have to wonder what to do; I'm always there.
After our session, I go home and back up every image right away, then start editing. You'll usually get a few sneak peeks within 12–72 hours, a small preview gallery in 3–7 days, and your full wedding gallery in about 2–10 weeks (spring and fall can be closer to the longer end, and I'll keep you posted).
Once everything's finished, your photos are delivered in a lifetime online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints. Any add-ons like albums, polaroids, illustrations, or print credit are sent out right after.
Wedding Photography FAQs
How Many Hours of Coverage Do We Need?
It depends on you! If you care about getting-ready moments, a first look, full ceremony, family photos, golden hour portraits, and reception coverage, most couples land somewhere between 8–12 hours. A smaller, more intimate day might need less, while a full timeline with lots of moving parts usually needs more breathing room.
What If the Weather Changes?
Weather shifts happen all the time! It's not a cause to push the panic button. A good photographer will already be thinking of backup spots, indoor options, and ways to use the light you do have.
Rain can actually make photos feel more romantic and real, and cloudy skies are basically nature's softbox. We'll pivot the plan if we need to, and you'll still get beautiful images that feel like your day.
Can We Add Engagement Sessions?
I have packages that include engagement sessions! It's also a perfect chance for you and for us to get more comfortable working together before your wedding day. You get to see how I guide you, how you two naturally interact, and what it feels like to be photographed without any pressure.
By the time the wedding comes around, it feels way more natural.
How Long Do Photos Take to Deliver?
After your wedding, you'll see a few sneak peeks within 12–72 hours, then a preview gallery in about 3–7 days. Full wedding galleries are usually delivered in 2–10 weeks, depending on the season and how full the calendar is (spring and fall are busiest). Either way, I'll keep you updated so you always know what to expect!
