What to Expect Before Your Engagement Session

Your engagement session is one of the first moments where everything starts to feel real. It's the beginning of your story being photographed. Not the wedding day yet, but something a bit softer, more playful, and entirely about the two of you. And if you're wondering how to prepare, what to wear, or where to go, this guide will walk you through everything with ease.

When to Start Planning + What "Being Prepared" Really Means

Most couples start planning their engagement photos anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before the session. There's no strict timeline, but giving yourself enough breathing room helps you choose outfits you love, pick the right location, and find a date that works for everyone. Planning ahead also means you avoid the last-minute stress of trying to find something to wear or settling for a time of day that doesn't match the look you want.

Preparing for your engagement session is a mix of simple steps that make a big difference. Choosing outfits that feel like "you," finding a location that matches your style, talking through ideas with your photographer, and making sure you're both comfortable with the plan, these things set the tone for the photos you'll get.

Good preparation means you get to show up relaxed, knowing everything is taken care of. It keeps the session fun, intentional, and true to your personality as a couple.

How Engagement Photos Help You Feel Comfortable Before the Wedding

Engagement sessions are the perfect warm-up before the wedding day. You get familiar with being in front of the camera, learn how your photographer guides you, and feel out what poses or prompts feel natural. Most couples walk away saying, "Oh, this wasn't scary at all." And that's the whole point. By the time your wedding comes, you trust the process, you trust your photographer, and you get to be fully present.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

Outfits That Photograph Well in Any Setting

The best outfits are ones that make you feel confident and comfortable. Neutrals, earth tones, soft pastels, and classic pieces tend to photograph beautifully in almost every location. Think flowy dresses, denim, sweaters, or simple button-ups. The simpler the outfit, the more the focus stays on you and your connection, not the clothes.

Coordinating Colors and Styles

Personally, when clients ask me if they should match with their partner, I suggest coordinating outfits instead. Choose colors that complement each other and styles that feel like they're from the same world because you don't need to match exactly to look cohesive in photos. Here's an example: if we're doing a field session and you want to wear yellow, your partner in white is a dream combo.

Same idea with patterns: if you're feeling stripes (or florals or anything with movement), have your partner wear something simple to balance it out. It keeps the photos looking intentional without competing for attention. Think of it like curating a small palette that looks harmonious when you stand together.

What to Avoid Wearing (Common Mistakes Couples Make)

A few things don't photograph as well, and they can pull attention away from you:

  • Loud, neon colors
  • Distracting logos or graphics
  • Busy patterns that compete with your surroundings
  • Uncomfortable outfits that limit how you move

If you're unsure about what to wear, send your photographer your outfit ideas. They'll help you pick what works best for your chosen location and style. When my clients need outfit inspiration, the Pinterest boards are absolutely coming out. I love helping with this, and I'll guide you toward what I think will work best for your location and the vibe you're going for.

How to Choose the Right Location for Your Session

Choosing a Location That Matches Your Style and Personality

Think about what feels like you. Do you want somewhere cozy and meaningful, like the place you had your first date? Or do you picture tall grass at sunset, a downtown street, a quiet forest, or even your own home? The best location is one where you feel comfortable and where your connection naturally stands out. Let your photographer know the feeling you're hoping for, and they'll help you find a spot that brings it to life.

Popular Engagement Photo Spots in Oklahoma

If you're still wondering where to take your engagement photos, Oklahoma is full of beautiful spots: open fields with golden sunlight, quiet lakesides, rooftop views, charming small towns, and nature trails. The "perfect" place really depends on the vibe you want. Some couples love a city feel, others want nature or something more intimate and private.

And if you're in the Tulsa area, here are a few tried-and-true locations that photograph like a dream:

  • Philbrook Museum of Art - timeless architecture, lush gardens, and major romantic energy.
  • Downtown Tulsa - urban, city light and city vibes. Plus you can take your pictures by the Centennial Clock!
  • Tulsa Garden Center at Woodward Park - classic, floral, and soft in every season (plus so many little pockets to explore for garden lovers!)
  • Turkey Mountain - perfect if you're looking for something a little adventurous, a little wild, and with a perfect trail.

If you already have a spot that means something to you two, I'm always down to make it work. And if you don't? I'll help you land on a place that fits what you're looking for.

How to Know You've Chosen the Right Photographer

What Makes a Photographer a Good Personality Fit

A photographer isn't just someone who takes your pictures, they're the person guiding you, hyping you up, calming your nerves, and helping you feel like yourselves.

When couples work with me, that's often the first thing they mention: how easy and natural it feels. I listen closely to what you want, pay attention to the small things that matter to you, and make sure you never feel awkward or unsure. My goal is for your engagement session to feel like a fun, relaxed date, not a photoshoot you have to "perform" for.

Experience With Both Oklahoma and Destination Sessions

Whether your engagement session is by a quiet Oklahoma field at sunset or in a completely new place that means something to you, I bring the same level of preparation and calm. Photographing in different settings has taught me how to adapt quickly to shifting light, sudden weather changes, busy locations, or unexpected challenges. That flexibility means you get to stay present and enjoy the moment while I handle the technical side.

A Consistent Style and Guiding Presence You Can Rely On

Your engagement photos should feel like you—warm, emotional, and true to your connection. My style stays consistent across locations, lighting, and seasons, so you always know what to expect. But beyond style, I guide you through every step: how to stand, where to look, when to relax, and when to just be in the moment with your partner.

You're never left guessing. I'm there to support you, calm the nerves, and bring out the real connection between you two. And because I love a little extra, you can also get polaroids during the session, the option for a custom signature album, a digital lifetime gallery to keep everything safe forever, and raw phone content for those real, in-between moments you'll want to relive. And after you've had the chance to share your photos first, with your permission, I'll post a little behind-the-scenes from your session too.

Photographer's Tips for the Best Engagement Photos

How to Add Meaning With Props, Rings, and Personal Details

Small details bring your photos to life – your rings, a love letter, a blanket for a picnic, or even a favorite drink you always share together. Props don't have to be elaborate. They just need to feel like something you would naturally include in a moment together.

Hair, Makeup, and Grooming Tips for Camera-Ready Results

You don't need a full glam look unless that's your style. Clean, polished makeup photographs beautifully, and soft, natural hair movement adds warmth to your images. For men, a fresh shave or tidy beard trim is usually enough. Most importantly, choose what makes you feel confident, not what feels forced.

Simple Posing Tips That Look Natural in Photos

Engagement photos don't rely on stiff poses. They're built on movement: walking, laughing, leaning in, holding hands, brushing hair aside. One of the easiest ways to make everything feel effortless is to do something you genuinely love together. Grab coffee, wander somewhere you always go, pop a bottle of champagne, or even make it a full-on date night. I once had a couple choose a bar arcade for their session and I basically just third-wheeled while they played games and chilled by the car. It was so natural, so them, and the photos felt like a memory instead of a "photoshoot."

Your photographer will guide you with prompts that feel natural, so you're never left wondering what to do.

Building Trust and Connection With Your Photographer

The more comfortable you feel with your photographer, the more relaxed and genuine your photos become. Share your ideas, your concerns, your vibe– anything that helps them understand you. Trust turns simple photos into meaningful ones.

FAQs

When Should We Schedule Our Engagement Photos?

Most couples schedule their session 6–12 months before the wedding, or whenever they plan to use the photos for save-the-dates.

How Long Does an Engagement Session Take?

Engagement sessions can be as short as an hour or two, depending on what we're doing, but with me the maximum is up to 3 hours. That way we're never rushing. We'll have plenty of time for outfit changes, multiple spots if you want them, and a slow, relaxed pace that lets everything feel natural.

How Many Outfits Should We Bring?

Most couples bring one or two outfits. One tip is to bring 2 outfits: casual and a dressier look. If you want to bring more, go for it! We'll just factor that into our plan so your session still feels relaxed and unrushed. And if you need help deciding, my Pinterest boards and I are ready!

Can We Include Our Dog or a Special Location?

Absolutely. Pets, sentimental places, and meaningful details make your session even more personal. Just let your photographer know ahead of time so they can help plan accordingly.

When Will We Receive Our Final Photos?

Turnaround times depend on the season, but here's what you can expect with me: you'll get immediate sneak peeks within about 12–72 hours, then a sneak peek gallery in roughly 3–7 days. Your full engagement gallery comes after that, and during busy seasons (spring and fall) it may take a little longer. Either way, I'll keep you in the loop the whole time, and once everything is finished your images get uploaded to your lifetime digital gallery.

How to Reserve Your Date

Booking your session is simple. Start by reaching out through my contact form with your date preferences, your session type, your budget range, and the vibe you're imagining. Use that message box to tell me your ideas, theme, what you hope to get out of this session, or even any questions you've got. Once I have that, I'll get back to you and we'll lock in a date that fits your vision and the best light.

What Happens After Booking

After you send an inquiry (unless you are a referral, then you skip ahead), we pick a date and a general location area using an initial client questionnaire. The more you share with me, the better I can plan a session that feels authentic to you two. Once your contract is signed and your retainer is paid, we are ready to go.

Preparing for a Smooth, Stress-Free Experience

As long as you've planned ahead, even just a little, you can show up feeling confident and excited. Leading up to your session, I confirm exact timing with my photography timer app so we land in the best light, and I will send you a few quick prep tips to help you feel ready. If you have ideas, I am always down to collaborate, and if you have no clue what to do, that is totally fine too. I will guide you the whole way.
